Can AI shopping agents buy from my WooCommerce or Shopify store?

What an AI agent needs to buy from a Shopify or WooCommerce store, how StartShop.ai adds A2A, MCP and Google UCP, and the controls you keep.

By StartShop Editorial

Yes. An AI shopping agent can buy from a Shopify or WooCommerce store once the store exposes its catalog, quotes and checkout in a form agents can call. StartShop.ai connects to your existing store and adds those agent surfaces (A2A, MCP and Google UCP), next to a chat and voice assistant for human shoppers.

Why merchants are asking this now

When a shopper asks an AI assistant to find something, the assistant can do one of two things. It can send the shopper to a product page and stop there. Or it can try to finish the job: check the price, confirm the item is in stock, and place the order.

The first case is about being found. The second is about being buyable, and that is the question this article answers. Being found depends on clean product data, structured markup and crawlable pages. We cover that in a separate playbook: How to optimize your Shopify store for ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude. Here we look at the step after discovery: can an agent actually complete a purchase from your store, and on what terms?

What an AI agent needs from your store

A person can work around a confusing checkout. An agent mostly cannot. To buy on someone's behalf, an agent needs a store that answers three kinds of request in a predictable, machine-readable way.

1. A structured catalog it can search. The agent has to find the right product and variant, with price and availability, without guessing from page layout. A storefront built for human eyes is not the same as a catalog an agent can query.

2. Quotes it can rely on. Before it commits, the agent needs a firm answer to "what will this cost, delivered to this address, by this date?" That means price, shipping and timing in one response, not spread across several pages.

3. A checkout it is allowed to start. The agent needs a defined way to create an order: which items, how many, where to ship. Payment and fulfilment then run on the systems the store already uses.

Behind all three sits a fourth requirement that is about the merchant, not the agent: control. You need to decide which agents get access, what they can do, and how often, and you need a record of what they did.

A storefront built for people using a browser does not, by itself, give agents a uniform search, quote and checkout interface with merchant-set permissions. That gap is what an agent-ready layer fills.

How StartShop.ai adds this to Shopify and WooCommerce

StartShop.ai connects to your existing Shopify or WooCommerce store. Your catalog syncs into StartShop.ai, while inventory, pricing and fulfilment stay in your platform. In the words of our site: we sync, but we don't take over. You do not move platforms or rebuild your storefront.

Once connected, the same catalog serves two kinds of buyer:

  • Human shoppers get a conversational shopping assistant on your store, by chat, voice or video, that can find products, answer questions and help them check out.
  • AI agents get agent surfaces for search, quotes and checkout through A2A, MCP and Google UCP, plus a REST interface. Agents that speak these protocols can browse, request a quote and open a checkout session.

Checkouts that agents start use existing payment rails. StartShop.ai does not invent a new way to pay; the payment step stays with the providers you already work with.

For developers building agents, there is a public developer page that describes the flow: pick a store, request a key, then transact through REST, MCP or UCP. For the platforms and tools we connect to, see Integrations.

Controls: what agents can and cannot do

Letting software place orders raises fair questions about risk. The controls StartShop.ai publishes are deliberately simple:

  • Agents request access; you approve it. An agent asks for a key to your store, and you decide whether to grant it.
  • Scoped API keys. Each key carries explicit scopes: search, quote, negotiate, checkout and order. An agent that only needs to search and quote never gets the right to order.
  • Rate limits you set. Each key has a per-minute rate limit chosen by the merchant.
  • An audit log. Every call an agent makes is recorded.
  • One-click revoke. If an agent misbehaves, or you simply change your mind, you can cut off its access at once.

These controls limit what an agent can do with your store. They do not remove every risk of agentic commerce, such as prompt injection or disputes over who authorised a purchase. We cover those in Agentic commerce risks: prompt injection, fraud and liability.

An example: our own demo storefront

To show the flow without pointing at anyone's business, here is how it works on a demo storefront that we run ourselves. This is our own demo, not a customer, and we are describing the steps, not reporting results.

  1. Access. A test agent requests a key for the demo store with the search, quote and checkout scopes. We approve it.
  2. Search. The agent asks the catalog for a product that matches a shopper's request, for example a size and a colour, and gets back structured items with price and availability.
  3. Quote. The agent asks what the item will cost delivered to a given country by a given date, and gets one answer it can act on.
  4. Checkout. The agent opens a checkout session for the chosen item. Payment runs on the store's existing rails.
  5. Record. Each of those calls appears in the audit log, under that agent's key.

The same catalog, at the same time, serves a human shopper who asks the store's chat or voice assistant for help. One store, two kinds of buyer.

FAQ

Do I have to leave Shopify or WooCommerce?

No. StartShop.ai connects to your existing Shopify or WooCommerce store. Inventory, pricing and fulfilment stay in your platform, and you keep your current storefront.

Which agent protocols are supported?

StartShop.ai exposes search, quotes and checkout to AI agents through A2A, MCP and Google UCP, and also through a REST interface.

Can human shoppers use the same store?

Yes. The same catalog powers a chat, voice and video shopping assistant for people and the agent surfaces for AI agents. You sell to both from one store.

How do I control what agents can do?

Agents request access and you approve it. Each API key has explicit scopes (search, quote, negotiate, checkout, order) and a per-minute rate limit you set. Every call is audited, and you can revoke a key in one click.

Is there a free plan?

Yes. StartShop.ai has a Free plan at $0.
